Pitch development work commences

posted 26 Apr 2015, 13:25 by Weigle Ahn   [ updated 2 May 2015, 12:36 ]

Since our successful fundraising draw in April 2014 much work has been going on behind the scenes to progress the project and begin phase 1 development of site.

In July 2014 Lotto funding of €100,000 was secured through the Sports Capital Grant Fund which together with the development draw income meant that finance was in place to complete phase 1.

On securing this funding the lengthy tender process for the works was commenced in mid 2014. Early in 2015 the successful tenderers were agreed by the club and Sports Capital Grant authorities:

·      Development of two playing pitches, walkway, drainage work, phase 1 entrance and car parking. – Penturf Limited, Carlow.

·      Site boundary fencing – P.D. Fencing Ltd, Thomastown

Both contractors have commenced their work (March 2015) and subject to weather conditions it is hoped that phase 1 will be complete by June. The drainage works and playing surfaces then will require time to “bed in” thereafter. This process will be monitored by our engineer and main contractor who will advise on when the facilities can be used. Again this timeline will very much depend on weather conditions, however a minimum of 12 months will be required to allow the surface to mature

Plans for phase 2 will begin in late 2015. This will include installation of playing equipment (goal posts, netting etc.), construction of club rooms and ancilliary works.

Of course the progress of this phase will be dependent on the availability of funds. To this end a phase 2 fundraiser will be rolled out in early 2016 and once again the club will look to the community for their continued support.

After four months of hard work over 250 people gathered in Gowran Park on Saturday night April 12th to witness the Young Irelands GAA Club Monster Draw. Kilkenny County Board Chairman, Ned Quinn was guest of honour and kept the flag flying for the south when he picked the winning ticket, that of Mr Eamon Doherty, Slieverue,  who won a Ford Ka from Michael Lyng Motors.

It was a night of celebration as the volunteers and club members who worked tirelessly sat back and recounted their efforts. Over 10,000 tickets were sold for this development draw making it one of the most, if not the most, successful draw of its kind ever organised in the county.  #

Young Irelands GAA Club are embarking on a hugely significant development which will cost in excess of €750,000. The success of which is very much dependent on those within the local community getting behind and supporting this badly needed upgrade of facilities. As reflected in the effort and commitment to this fundraiser the community of Gowran and Dungarvan will not be found wanting in this regard.

Young Irelands GAA club would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all those who volunteered in any way towards the organisation and selling of tickets for this draw. In was a hugely impressive effort and all involved can feel very much part of this development drive.

The Club would also like to thank all those who purchased tickets, the vast majority of whom were from outside the parish and had no links with the Club. The community spirit which emanated from this fundraiser was very gratifying and showed how important people across the country value the community and its voluntary effort. A special thanks to all the GAA Clubs across Kilkenny. Every Club is challenged with generating income year in year out. However the recognition of a one off development fundraiser of this nature was welcomed across the county and Young Irelands greatly appreciates and acknowledges the support it received from the members of every GAA Club in Kilkenny (and Mount Leinster Rangers in Carlow) when a knock came to their door.

We look forward with purpose to the day when Young Irelands GAA Club can welcome everyone to the Club's new facilities. Ní Neart Le Cur Le Chéile.

A great night was had by all in attendance at the Launch of the Development Plan for our new Club Grounds. The night was also a celebration of the sense of community which Young Irelands GAA Club represents. Many photographs of various club events over the years along with our plans for the future were on display.
Tom Hunt did a fantastic job as MC for the night as he introduced the various speakers. Chairperson, Liam Walsh, spoke of the growth in underage base of the club in recent years and of what great benefit this development will be to the club. Conor Denieffe, Vice Chairperson, Kilkenny County Board commended the club in their aim to provide improved facilities for the members of the club. This development will need to be well planned for financially and Club Treasurer, Patrick Farrell, outlined club plans in this regard. The most immediate initiative will be a Monster Draw and co-ordinator Michael Pitt spoke of how this will be organised.  A short video was shown which captured the essence of what our club means to so many people and the sense of enjoyment provided through the years from the founding of the club to the present day. This video is available to view on our home page.  Special Guest for the night, Micheal O Muircheartaigh, captivated the attention of all present as he spoke of what the GAA Club means to the community. It was a privilege to have Micheal in attendance to launch this Development Plan.
